It’s the night before finals and tomorrow is going to be a very short day for me. I’m more than ready for everything and have already taken my online class finals and done well. I’m just really jazzed up about getting another semester over with and having some time for myself and my online junk. I’m working on some new stuff, ditching old stuff, and rebranding where necessary along with starting a huge online marketing push for my sisters custom art website. I’m also looking forward to posting some of my less boring course work on here.

So now I try and get some rest so that I won’t be late tomorrow!

Here’s a BLURRY pic of my tv screen featuring Tim Smith in front being lit by a tiny flashlight and someone else I don’t recognize. I feel sorry for her, she had a huge bright light being shined right at her face. KRGV is now operating with weird lighting, making everything all the better.

And heres a still shot from a vid I took while walking around outside –where I almost got hit by a few things. Nothing too bad came my way. A branch or two and a low flying bird (no joke.)

I really want to post a video but my connection is going in and out. The power has been steady and flashed off once or twice. Thank god for battery power.

Alrighty here I go again. Dolly is inching her way close to the Rio Grande Valley and I have a few thoughts and a photo of what’s going as I type this.

Yes, thats KRGV on with Tim Smith and Alan Shoemaker.

Now, first of all… I can’t stand people freaking out over a cat 1! I also can’t stand those who make comments saying they wish Dolly was headed straight for Mexico instead of our way to save ourselves the trouble. For gods sake come hell or high water –which both seem likely in some areas, in the end everyone will be fine. We’ve got cash; we’ve got a great system to help out those who are in need if anything gets really screwed up, those South of the border do not.

Second, I miss Larry James. I’m watching KRGV as we speak; Tim and Alan are doing a GREAT job, but they should have snatched Larry for tonight. Having someone like Larry on hand for events like this would be nice. Crossing the KGBT – KRGV line would also be a friendly twist. Maybe I just need to get over him being off screen. Although, maybe I cant –http://luisrocks.com/blog/2008/05/05/did-kgbt-4’s-larry-james-get-sacked/

Finally, I love the way the national media can’t seem to get a good grasp of things down here. There’s always a weird shot of nothing but waves and seagulls at the island and a bunch of dirty men filling sandbags. Not exactly what I see when driving around but I’ll shut up before I dig in too deep. I wish they’d bring in some of the local folks, Will Ripley, Oscar Adame, Letty Garza. You know –the ones the Valley can be proud of. Then again, what the hell do I know? That reminds me; CNN clicked onto KRGV.com on air and had about 3 seconds of Will before cutting it off… I’m not sure what happened there.

That’s it for now!

*Update*

Yes, I admitted to watching CNN. There was a commercial on FOX News! Kidding aside, I do find my way around cable news channels and I’m still a total news junky.

Locally, I cant watch anything but News Channel 5 (KRGV)

*Update 2*

I also just realized the title was a bit misleasing considering I didn’t include a weather pic. Oh well, bite me.

Really… I don’t.

From Wikipedia:

The holiday commemorates an initial victory of Mexican forces led by General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín over French forces in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The date is observed in the United States and other locations around the world as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride.

A common misconception in the United States is that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico’s Independence Day; Mexico’s Independence Day is actually September 16 (dieciséis de septiembre in Spanish), which is the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico.

—-

In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has taken on a significance beyond that in Mexico. The date is perhaps best recognized in the United States as a date to celebrate the culture and experiences of Americans of Mexican ancestry, much as St. Patrick’s Day, Oktoberfest, and the Chinese New Year are used to celebrate those of Irish, German, and Chinese ancestry, respectively.

So.

We all know that schools take time to teach students about this [The Monitor - Local schools preserve culture with Cinco de Mayo celebrations] my question is… why? I don’t see a point and I hope it doesn’t take more than 25 minutes to explain. I really hope they didn’t spend a whole week or more putting together all kinds of crap.

One Person Kinda Got It Right

“Lino Garcia, professor emeritus of Spanish Literature at UTPA, said he’s noticed Cinco de Mayo is not celebrated as widely in the Valley as it is in other parts of the country, largely because many local residents are native to the area.”

It kinda seems like some might want to change that.

It’s 6:24AM and I’m sleepy. Rants over.

OH OH OH.. http://www.tea.state.tx.us/student.assessment/reporting/taksagg/yr0607/index.html look at some scores and think about wasting time on this.

Ever since I started this blog I’ve tried to avoid talking serious politics but tonight I’m in an odd mood so why not!?! What’s on my mind? Immigration reform, yes, the big one that ticks off so many people.

Lately I’ve spoke to or listened to allot of people voice their opinions when it comes to illegal immigrants, I’ve found myself lost in allot of bullshit rhetoric.

On one end of the spectrum you have the “send them home!” folks on the other you get the “they have a right to be here!” and so on. I haven’t really made up my mind on anything up until this point but have a few points to make.

First of all, I don’t blame these people for seeking a better life, infact I know that most of us, Americans, would do the same damn thing. If I was stuck in a country that was corrupt and had essentially no middle class or promise for a better future… I’d run, swim, dig or do whatever else was needed to get the hell out of there. I feel sympathetic for the ones coming across for the sake of living the American dream, I don’t blame them, I do blame their government and ever single elected official who hasn’t put pressure on the governments from when the immigrate, the Mexican government in particular considering most illegal immigrants originate from there.

Now let’s not cover the sun with a single finger like our elected officials seem to –if they even manage to do that. Let’s get serious, we do need them. They do much and bygolly they tend to do it at a great price, ofcourse that’s kept on the DL (‘down low’ for those of you not into acronyms) and played down by most people, but we do need this labor force and theres no sense in denying it, ever single American would be up in arms if from one day to another food prices sky rocketed but that would most certainly happen if we SOMEHOW managed to round up all of the illegal immigrants and nudged them over the border while waving goodbye and trying to get our boots out of those few stubborn ones ass’.

We cant possibly send them all back home.

The vast majority of illegals here are sweet hardworking honest people.

We NEED them and should pretend like we don’t.

While some might view the children of illegals as being a drain on our society and school systems in particular. They might financially cause problems but if we educate them to the best of our ability it is far more likely that they won’t cause problems later in their life and that they’ll become hardworking citizens at some point. On the contrary, if we toss them aside they’ll most likely end up on the streets causing more problems. Children are dragged along and shouldn’t be blamed, hated, teased or forgotten.

At the same time we must also admit that

They did break the law and knew they were. (children aside)

They shouldn’t be given a free pass to citizenship.

They don’t deserve to cut ahead of the line of others who have been trying to get in the US legally.

Once again I know I could say more and probably missed allot of points for the sake of making this quick but that’s just some of whats going on in my head.

I don’t see this problem being solved anytime soon, and living on the border this is as touchy as it gets. I get crap from all sides because I don’t agree with either. I’ve been called a traitor simply because my name is Luis and I’m supposed to support those who share names like mine and I’ve been called soft for not wanting to kick them the hell out of here. So I’m screwed all around. It’s a system of needs, rights, wrongs and oh so many smaller possible screw-ups that can be made if our elected officials don’t work something out.

This post dragged on for longer than it should have, I’m done. BTW, I didn’t proofread this feel free to point out any crap.
